China Longyuan Power, the country's leading wind power developer, made a significant milestone on the 28th by achieving a new era of wind power capacity with the commissioning of Wind Farm No. 37 in Yunnan. This development marks a major step forward for the company as it continues to expand its renewable energy footprint across China.
The Longtan project, with an installed capacity of 49,500 kW, is located at an elevation of over 2,500 meters in Luliang County, Qujing City, Yunnan Province. It is one of the few high-altitude wind farms in the region and features 33 specially designed wind turbines suited for the mountainous conditions of southwest China. The farm is expected to generate around 120 million kilowatt-hours annually, with an average utilization rate of nearly 2,500 hours. The 35 kV distribution network and 110 kV booster station ensure stable power transmission without interruptions.
Wind curtailment—when wind turbines are connected to the grid but production is limited due to grid regulations—is widely regarded as one of the biggest challenges facing the Chinese wind power sector. As wind energy grows, so do the complications related to grid integration and power management.
China’s main focus for large-scale wind power has been on the "Three North" regions (northwest, north, and northeast), where wind resources are most abundant. However, these areas are now facing growing difficulties, including the depletion of high-quality sites, increased wind curtailment, and challenges in securing project approvals.
In response, Longyuan Power, under the leadership of General Manager Xie Changjun, began exploring new opportunities in high-altitude, low-wind-speed areas, as well as the coastal regions of southeastern China, which offer better grid access and higher electricity prices. Since 2007, the company has been actively expanding into these markets.
By the end of September 2012, Longyuan Power had secured over 3 million kW of wind resources in Yunnan, with 198,000 kW already operational and 330,000 kW under construction. During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan†period, the company planned to invest in 1 million kW of wind projects in Bijie and Tongren, Guizhou. In Tibet, Longyuan is pushing forward with the world’s highest-altitude wind power project in Nagqu.
On the offshore front, Longyuan Power launched the 182,000 kW Jiangsu Rudong Wind Farm in November 2012. The company is also expanding its offshore presence along the coasts of Liaoning, Tianjin, Shandong, Zhejiang, and Fujian.
In low-wind-speed regions, Longyuan Power built China’s first large-scale low-wind-speed wind farm in Anhui’s Lai'an area, reaching 250,000 kW by the end of 2011.
In the first half of 2012, Longyuan Power generated 8.434 billion kWh of wind power, representing a 19.31% increase compared to the same period the previous year. The company also maintained its position as the most profitable wind power company in China.
