According to the latest customs data, China imported 5,772 tons of polysilicon in November, marking a slight increase of 0.59% compared to the previous month. From January to November, the total import volume reached 76,006 tons, representing a significant year-on-year growth of 29.84%. In terms of pricing, the average import price for polysilicon dropped to a new low in November, reaching $20.39 per kilogram—a 12.90% decline from October. This is also much lower than the average price of $25.76/kg recorded during the same period in the first eleven months of the year, which was 58.04% below the 2011 level.
In terms of sourcing, South Korea, the United States, and Germany accounted for 85.97% of China’s polysilicon imports in November. South Korea held a 26.1% share, followed by the U.S. at 40.3%, and Germany at 19.5%. The import prices from South Korea and Germany both declined slightly compared to October, standing at $19.41/kg and $25.88/kg, respectively. Meanwhile, the U.S. saw a modest rebound in import prices, reaching $17.04/kg, though it still remained the lowest among the three countries.
Industry experts note that the sharp drop in import prices reflects strong market pressure, partly due to China's ongoing retrospective tax investigation, which has led German suppliers to clear large inventories. As the year-end approaches, major producers are pushing to meet sales targets, often accepting lower bids. Notably, Germany's import volume fell by more than 1,127 tons in November, with its average import price dropping to $25.88/kg. However, the Silicon Industry Branch clarified that this decline is not directly linked to Wacker’s production cuts, which were already announced in its quarterly reports. With production capacity expected to decrease by 20% by the end of September, combined with weak global demand and overcapacity, the industry is under further pressure, leading to continued export declines from Germany.
With the Ministry of Commerce launching a retrospective tax investigation on polysilicon, the market expects prices to hit a bottom soon, although any recovery is likely to be limited. Moreover, the outcomes of trade negotiations between China and the EU could significantly impact silicon material and component prices, adding complexity to the market dynamics in the coming months.
On the export side, China exported 410 tons of polysilicon in November, bringing the cumulative exports for the year to 1,497 tons.
