China Longyuan Power, the largest wind energy developer in the country, made a major milestone on the 28th with the commissioning of the 37th wind farm in Yunnan. This development has pushed the company’s total wind power capacity into the tens of thousands of kilowatts, marking a significant step forward in its renewable energy strategy.
The newly commissioned Longtan project, located in Luliang County, Qujing City, Yunnan Province, is a high-altitude wind farm situated at an elevation of over 2,500 meters. With an installed capacity of 49,500 kW, it features 33 specially designed wind turbines that are optimized for the unique climatic conditions of China’s mountainous southwest region. The project is expected to generate around 120 million kWh annually, with a utilization rate close to 2,500 hours. A reliable 35 kV distribution network and a 110 kV substation ensure stable power transmission, minimizing the risk of curtailment.
Wind curtailment—where wind farms are connected to the grid but forced to reduce output due to grid constraints—is widely regarded as one of the biggest challenges facing the Chinese wind power sector. As wind energy expands, especially in regions like the "Three Norths" (northwest, north, and northeast), the issue of curtailment has become more pronounced, threatening long-term growth.
To address these challenges, Longyuan Power has been diversifying its focus beyond traditional wind-rich areas. Since 2007, the company has been exploring opportunities in high-altitude regions, inland low-wind-speed zones, and coastal areas with strong demand and higher electricity prices. These efforts have led to significant progress in provinces like Yunnan, Guizhou, and Tibet.
As of September 30, 2012, Longyuan Power had secured over 3 million kW of wind resources in Yunnan, with 198,000 kW already operational and another 330,000 kW under construction. During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, the company planned to invest in 1 million kW of wind projects in Bijie and Tongren, Guizhou. In Tibet, it was pushing forward with the world’s highest-altitude wind power project in Nagqu.
On the offshore front, Longyuan Power launched the Jiangsu Rudong Wind Farm in November 2012, with an installed capacity of 182,000 kW. The company is also expanding its offshore presence along the coasts of Liaoning, Tianjin, Shandong, Zhejiang, and Fujian.
In addition, Longyuan Power has been pioneering low-wind-speed wind farms. In May 2011, China’s first large-scale low-wind-speed wind farm was completed in Anhui’s Lai'an area, reaching 250,000 kW by the end of 2011.
By the first half of 2012, Longyuan Power generated 8.434 billion kWh of wind power, a 19.31% increase compared to the same period in 2011. The company maintained its position as the most profitable wind power firm in China.
