The difference between single-acting actuators and double-acting actuators

The main difference between a double-acting and a single-acting pneumatic actuator lies in how they operate and reset. A double-acting actuator requires air supply on both sides to control the movement of the valve—when air is supplied to one side, the actuator rotates to open the valve, and when air is supplied to the other side, it closes the valve. This type of actuator does not have a built-in spring for resetting; instead, it relies entirely on the air source for operation and can only return to its original position if the air is reintroduced. On the other hand, a single-acting pneumatic actuator uses a spring to return to its default position when the air supply is lost. Typically, it opens the valve when air is applied and automatically closes it when the air is cut off, thanks to the spring mechanism. This makes it ideal for use in hazardous environments where safety is critical, such as in the presence of flammable gases or liquids. In case of an emergency or loss of air supply, the single-acting actuator can automatically reset, reducing potential risks. Unlike the double-acting type, which requires continuous air pressure to function, the single-acting actuator offers a more reliable fail-safe option. Single-acting actuators are generally available in two types: normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC). A normally open actuator will close when air is supplied and open when the air is released. Conversely, a normally closed actuator will open when air is applied and close when the air is cut off. Understanding these differences helps in selecting the right actuator based on specific application requirements and safety standards.
