These masks are typically made of three layers: the inner layer is usually non-woven fabric, the middle layer consists of ultra-fine polypropylene melt-blown material, and the outer layer is either non-woven fabric or ultra-thin polypropylene melt-blown material. This structure allows them to effectively filter out non-oily particles such as dust, acid mist, coal dust, cement dust, and microorganisms, with a filtration efficiency of at least 95%.
However, even these masks cannot completely eliminate smog. Smog contains both non-oily and oily particulates, including soot, oil mist, asphalt smoke, coke oven smoke, and diesel exhaust. Additionally, it may contain harmful gases and chemicals that standard medical masks are not designed to filter out. According to Yue Weihua, director of the Material Inspection Department at the Beijing Medical Device Inspection Institute, "Medical masks are not sufficient to block all components of smog."
Yue also reminded the public that medical protective masks are primarily intended for use in healthcare settings and may not be suitable for everyday wear by ordinary individuals. For instance, N95 masks are typically used for occupational respiratory protection, offering protection against certain microbial particles like viruses, bacteria, mold, anthrax, and tuberculosis. However, due to their dense structure, they can be uncomfortable for prolonged use.
Before being sold on the market, all medical masks must undergo rigorous testing by nationally recognized institutions. Medical masks have the most stringent testing standards, with particle filtration efficiency and adhesion being the most critical performance indicators. The National Standard for Medical Protective Masks has been officially issued, and in addition to filtration tests, other requirements such as nose clip stability, mask fit, and microbiological safety must also be met. More than ten different tests are required for each type of medical mask to ensure quality and safety.
