Russia tests aeromotor based on superconducting technology

According to the Press Office of the Russian Foundation for Prospective Research, Russia has conducted the world's first test of an electric propulsion system based on high-temperature superconducting technology and completely powered by batteries.

According to the press office, within the framework of the joint project between the Prospect Research Foundation and SuperOx, researchers have carried out laboratory tests on aviation integrated power system components based on a unified high temperature superconducting platform. The test platform consists of batteries, high temperature superconducting cables, and high temperature Superconducting current limiting device and high-temperature superconducting motor. During the test, the engine was only powered by a specially designed high-power battery. The test was carried out under simulated takeoff and landing, battery charging and discharging conditions in flight, and emergency conditions.

The Prospect Research Foundation pointed out that the tested integrated power system will be used as a component of an experimental aviation hybrid power plant in the future. The test of the hybrid power plant as a component of the aircraft is planned to be carried out from 2020 to 2021.

It is reported that a joint project for the development of high-temperature superconducting motors was launched in December 2016. This technology opens the door for the manufacture of "all-electric" aircraft, such as vertical take-off and landing taxis and electric ships. At present, within the framework of the project, in order to demonstrate the performance of the technology, prototype motors with powers of 50 kW and 500 kW have been developed.
