Russia develops space washing machine to turn carbon dioxide into washing liquid

Ordinary washing machines require gravity to work, and must store a lot of water somewhere-this will increase the weight, so it is not suitable for carrying space missions to carry washing machines. Astronauts participating in long-term missions, such as astronauts performing a six-month mission on the International Space Station, often wear the same set of clothes for several days in a row. According to "Space Safety" magazine, wearing dirty clothes not only makes astronauts feel uncomfortable, but also may provide a "hotbed" for the growth and spread of dangerous microorganisms.

Korolev Energy Rocket and Space Company previously outlined the space washer program in a paper. The paper said that this washing machine can be installed on the International Space Station.

In the paper, the author estimates that about 1,450 pounds (about 658 kilograms) of clothing are shipped to the International Space Station each year to meet the requirements of three astronauts. The two-year trip to Mars will involve 6 crew members. Therefore, the required clothing may increase to 3 tons, and the cost and complexity of the task will increase. The author believes that the provision of hygienic treatment (washing) equipment on the International Space Station can significantly reduce the inventory of personal hygiene products and clothing.

Russian scientists say that this space washing machine does not use water, but carbon dioxide produced by astronauts breathing on the spacecraft. Special technology will turn these carbon dioxide into liquid under high pressure to wash clothes.

This is not the first space washer program. NASA had previously commissioned manufacturers to manufacture a prototype of a low-power, low-water-level cleaning device designed to work in low-Earth orbit or the microgravity conditions of the moon or Mars. .
