Old furniture continues to heat up

In the growing trend of domestic collections, ancient Chinese furniture that embodies traditional culture has become increasingly popular. In response to this shift, Zhang Zhongqiao founded Zhejiang Bogu Culture Development Co., Ltd., aiming to establish a furniture culture museum and promote cultural value. While Bogu focused on enhancing cultural depth, many antique furniture companies in Cixi’s Tianyuan District have transitioned from a factory-based model to a more diverse style that blends modern European, classical, and creative designs. These firms are also shifting their focus from purely export-oriented operations to include domestic sales as well. These two different development approaches have shown strong vitality, especially during the global financial crisis and the transfer of the wooden furniture industry. By 2013, 18 self-owned brands from Cixi's wooden furniture export companies, such as "Daisy," "Oubang," and "Bei Yi," had successfully exported 1,862 batches with a total value of $38.2 million, showing steady growth despite market fluctuations. "Zhejiang’s carved beds, Fujian’s screens, Hubei’s large cupboards, Shanxi’s window curtains, Anhui’s silk foils, and Jiangxi’s silk boxes—these items range from large cabinets to small carvings, and many were once burned in China. The traditional old furniture gathered together attracted overseas collectors," recalled staff from the Ningbo Cixi Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. This boom continued until the late 1990s, when companies like Yongxi, Enlightenment, Alte, MingQing, and Bogu emerged, turning Tianyuan into a major center for traditional furniture processing and distribution in China, alongside Beijing and Guangdong. At its peak, up to 70–80 containers of old furniture were shipped globally each month from Tianyuan. However, in the 21st century, with resource depletion and stricter regulations on cultural relics exports, the ancient furniture industry in Cixi began to decline. After the global financial crisis, international demand dropped sharply, leading to a long downturn in the sector. In recent years, with the rise of domestic collectors, the industry has seen a moderate recovery. Notably, literati writers and local elites have driven up the value of antique furniture through competitive collecting. Zhang Zhongqiao, general manager of Bogu Company, is optimistic about the current market trend, believing that China’s antique furniture industry will experience a new golden period. Recently, his company acquired a Qing Dynasty bed and screen, which saw their value double compared to last year. "As a non-renewable and scarce resource, old furniture is undoubtedly a valuable treasure, and an upturn is expected," said inspection and quarantine staff. This year, Bogu has partnered with American merchants to repurchase antique furniture from abroad, using the Hangzhou Bay Furniture Culture Museum as a platform. Imitation furniture is now gaining popularity through customization. Many Cixi companies are exploring new export strategies, both domestically and internationally. With the blending of Eastern and Western cultures, both antique and modern furniture are becoming popular in European and American households. The function of antique furniture has evolved from mere display to practical use. Companies like Alte led the way by introducing advanced machinery and standardized production, focusing on imitation. To meet the preferences of different countries, Alte hired over 30 designers from 10 nations, creating unique products that cover bedroom, dining, and living room sets. Ningbo Irwin Furniture Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has also made progress by collaborating with U.S. hotel design companies, offering custom services. Many Cixi enterprises have adopted similar strategies to develop the domestic market, with companies like Mingqing Furniture integrating East and West styles, seeing increased domestic sales. Despite these efforts, Cixi’s furniture industry still lags behind regions like Dongguan and Yuhuan in terms of supply chain completeness and scale. Handmade components lead to higher costs, while mechanized production in other areas offers greater efficiency and cost advantages. To ensure sustainable development, Cixi companies like Mingqing and Qi Da are closely involved in daily operations, managing quality and reducing waste, which has helped build a loyal customer base and improve efficiency. The “One Street and One Park” initiative aims to revitalize the industry. By transforming Tiantan Road into a Ming and Qing-style antique furniture street and developing the Tianyuan Antique Furniture Cultural Park, Cixi hopes to boost both its regional reputation and the overall furniture industry image.
