AQSIQ seizes fake and shoddy waterproof membranes

In a major crackdown on substandard and counterfeit construction materials, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) recently launched a nationwide campaign called "Quality Inspection and Sword Action" targeting fake waterproof membranes. The operation resulted in the seizure of over 10,500 fake products, including packaging and labels, across 217 manufacturing sites nationwide. According to the AQSIQ, the investigation uncovered 161 companies involved in the production and sale of substandard waterproof membranes. As a result, 60 illegal production facilities were shut down, and 89 factories suspected of producing counterfeit goods were seized. The action also led to the prosecution of 161 cases involving illegal activities related to the production and distribution of fake materials. The campaign was initiated in response to growing public concerns about building leaks and the prevalence of low-quality waterproofing products in the market. Many of these products fail to perform as advertised, leading to significant financial losses and safety risks for property owners and investors. Chen Xitong, Deputy Director of the AQSIQ Information Office, emphasized that the operation focused on cracking down on violations such as the unauthorized use of other manufacturers' names, non-compliance with national standards, and the production of unlicensed waterproof membranes. The AQSIQ worked closely with local authorities, including those in Tianjin, Hebei, and Liaoning, to conduct surprise inspections based on reports from the public and industry associations. Two inspection teams were dispatched to oversee enforcement efforts and ensure that local quality supervision bureaus carried out the crackdown effectively. The initiative reflects the AQSIQ's commitment to improving product quality and protecting consumer interests in the construction sector. This ongoing effort highlights the importance of maintaining high-quality standards in construction materials, especially in critical areas like waterproofing, where failure can lead to long-term damage and costly repairs. With continued vigilance and strict enforcement, the AQSIQ aims to eliminate substandard products from the market and restore public confidence in the industry.
