What does the jacking device include?

What are the main components of the jacking device?
The jacking equipment used in pipe jacking mainly consists of hydraulic jacks, high-pressure oil pumps, top irons, tool pipes, and earth removal and transportation systems. These components work together to ensure smooth and accurate pipe installation during trenchless construction.

(1) Jacks

The jack is the core component of the jacking system. In this project, four 300-ton hydraulic jacks are planned for each working pit. The layout of the jacks in the working pit is designed as a combined unit to ensure that the point of application of the jacking force and the reaction force from the pipe wall align on the same axis. This alignment is crucial to avoid any bending moments that could cause misalignment or deviation during the jacking process. Based on construction experience, when using mechanical excavation, the jack’s contact point should ideally be positioned at 1/4 to 1/5 of the vertical diameter of the pipe, especially when there is a gap between the pipe's upper wall and the surrounding soil.

(2) High-Pressure Oil Pump

The oil pump is driven by an electric motor and operates at a rated pressure of 31.5 MPa. The hydraulic oil is distributed through a control valve to the jacks, with the oil inlet lines of each jack connected in parallel. This configuration ensures that all jacks operate consistently in terms of output and stroke, maintaining uniform force distribution across the system.

(3) Top Iron

The top iron serves as a critical component for transmitting and distributing the jacking force. It must be strong enough to withstand high pressure without deforming and should also be easy to handle and maneuver. Depending on its position and function, the top iron can be categorized into three types: horizontal top iron, straight top iron, and U-shaped top iron. Each type is used based on the specific requirements of the jacking operation.

(4) Other Equipment

A mobile working platform is installed in the working pit, constructed using 30-gauge steel beams and 15×15 cm wooden planks. A sliding platform is placed at the wellhead to facilitate pipe lowering and excavation. Additionally, a lifting frame is set up on the working platform, equipped with an electric hoist capable of lifting more than the weight of the pipe being installed. This setup ensures safe and efficient handling of the pipe during the entire jacking process.
