The AQSIQ (General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine) recently launched a major campaign targeting counterfeit and substandard waterproof membranes in the construction materials market. The initiative, titled "Quality Inspection and Sword Action," aimed to address widespread concerns about poor-quality waterproofing products that are falsely labeled as effective. As part of this operation, authorities across China seized over 10,500 fake packages and labels, closed down 60 illegal production sites, and investigated 161 companies involved in the manufacturing and sale of substandard waterproof membranes.
During a press conference held today, officials revealed that the campaign led to the identification of 217 suspected enterprises producing or selling fake waterproofing materials. Teams from Tianjin, Hebei, Liaoning, and other regions were deployed to conduct unannounced inspections based on reports from the public and industry associations. The crackdown focused on violations such as using false factory names, failing to meet mandatory quality standards, and operating without proper licenses.
Waterproofing is a critical component of construction projects, yet many consumers have faced serious issues due to defective products. Fake waterproof membranes often fail to perform their intended function, leading to leaks, structural damage, and significant financial losses for property owners. These substandard products not only cause inconvenience but also pose long-term risks to building safety.
Chen Xitong, deputy director of the AQSIQ’s Information Office, emphasized that the action was designed to protect both investors and end-users by eliminating fraudulent practices in the industry. By strengthening oversight and increasing enforcement, the AQSIQ aims to restore consumer confidence and ensure that only high-quality, safe waterproofing materials reach the market. This ongoing effort highlights the government's commitment to maintaining quality and transparency in the construction sector.
