Second-hand homes are becoming increasingly popular, and many homeowners who purchase these properties often face the hassle of re-laying solid wood flooring. This process can be costly, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. However, there is a more efficient way to refresh your floor—refurbishment. But it's important to understand that not all solid wood floors are suitable for this process, and some companies may take advantage of consumers by offering misleading services.
Refurbishing solid wood flooring typically involves sanding down the worn or damaged areas and applying a protective layer of wear-resistant lacquer or wax. Despite this, some homeowners end up disappointed with the results—such as uneven surfaces, visible joints, or even shorter lifespans. These issues often arise due to improper techniques or because the floor was not suitable for renovation in the first place.
Not All Solid Wood Floors Can Be Refurbished
Laminate flooring, for example, is made from wood chips and has a thin aluminum oxide coating on top. Once this layer is worn away, the floor can no longer be refinished and must be replaced. Attempting to refurbish it can actually speed up its deterioration.
Similarly, solid wood composite parquet requires careful consideration. The surface layer’s thickness plays a key role, but so does the color saturation of the wooden blocks. If the veneer is too thin or the surface is colored, polishing might ruin the original design or make the pattern less visible. This can lead to an unattractive finish after the process.
Experts recommend that only solid wood flooring, parquet, and bamboo flooring with a surface thickness of at least 4 mm are suitable for refurbishment. Additionally, partial repairs can sometimes create noticeable differences between old and new sections of the floor, so it’s important not to renovate blindly.
Be Cautious When Refurbishing Solid Wood Flooring
If you have brand-name solid wood flooring, it’s best to contact the manufacturer directly. Many brands offer professional refurbishment services for a fee, usually ranging from 40 to hundreds of yuan per square meter.
However, if you choose a third-party company, be aware that some may use imported paints (like those from Germany or France) to inflate prices. In reality, a reasonable cost for floor refurbishment is around 70 yuan per square meter. If a quote seems too high or too low, it’s wise to double-check and compare offers before making a decision.
