Ginger management should be scientific

The hedge shade for ginger is warm, but it does not provide sufficient protection against glare and heat. To address this, after planting, insert corn stalks that are 70 to 80 cm tall, placing them 12 to 15 cm south of the ginger furrows. These stalks should be woven together into a hedge and slightly tilted northward by 10 to 12 degrees, ensuring that the surface of the ginger furrow remains shaded. This shading helps protect the young ginger plants from excessive sunlight and promotes healthy growth. Ginger has a strong demand for nutrients, requiring three top-dressing applications throughout the growing season. The first application should be done when the seedlings reach 3 to 5 cm in height, using 15 to 20 kg of compound fertilizer per acre to encourage vigorous growth. When the seedlings develop three shoots of alfalfa, combine weeding with another top-dressing: apply 15 to 20 kg of bean cake fertilizer and 15 to 20 kg of ammonium sulfate per acre to accelerate the development of the ginger rhizome. Finally, when the seedlings have 5 to 6 shoots of glutinous rice, the rhizome grows rapidly, requiring more nutrients. At this stage, apply 25 kg of ammonium sulfate per acre. It's best to apply the fertilizer 15 cm away from the north side of the seedlings to avoid direct contact. Proper watering is crucial before planting. Keep the soil dry initially to raise the ground temperature and encourage germination. However, once the seedlings emerge, maintain consistent moisture until harvest to ensure high yield. Watering should begin after the seedlings have fully emerged. From summer to autumn, which is the peak growth period for ginger, water frequently in small amounts to keep the soil moist. Always water after fertilization and soil cultivation. Choose cooler times of the day—early morning or late evening—for watering, as this reduces stress on the plants. Avoid overwatering; use controlled irrigation methods to prevent waterlogging. During the rainy season, ensure proper drainage to avoid excess moisture, which can lead to root rot. In hot and rainy seasons, weeds grow quickly, competing with ginger for water and nutrients, which can hinder its growth. Regular weeding and cultivation are essential, typically done 1 to 2 times per month. Since ginger has a shallow root system and weak branching ability, deep cultivation is not recommended. Instead, perform light cultivation in conjunction with watering and fertilization. Mulching with grass can help lower the soil temperature and retain moisture, creating an ideal environment for ginger growth. After each cultivation, cover the roots with 3 to 6 cm of soil to prevent exposure and maintain quality. This practice also helps reduce weed competition and supports the overall health of the crop.
