The effectiveness of pesticide application is significantly influenced by weather conditions. Over the years, I have worked closely with farmers at the grassroots level and have gathered a lot of practical information. Based on my experience, I believe that applying pesticides under the following four weather conditions can greatly reduce their efficacy and even cause harm:
First, during windy conditions, pesticide application becomes risky. Strong winds can blow pesticide particles or droplets away, preventing them from properly adhering to crop surfaces. This not only reduces the effectiveness of the treatment but also increases the risk of exposure to workers, leading to possible poisoning.
Second, rainy weather can wash away the pesticide before it has time to take effect. Rain can directly remove the chemical from the crops, reducing its impact and potentially causing water pollution. For light rain, seed dressings are usually affected, while emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulations tend to form a protective film on the crop surface, offering some resistance to rain. Wettable powders, however, are the most resistant to both dust and rain erosion.
Third, high temperatures can cause rapid decomposition of the pesticide. Applying chemicals in extreme heat is not advisable because crops have increased metabolic activity and open stomata, which can allow the pesticide to enter the plant tissue more easily, leading to potential crop damage.
Fourth, in low humidity or during heavy fog or morning dew, the effectiveness of pesticides may be reduced. When the air is dry, the pesticide solution may evaporate too quickly, lowering its concentration and effectiveness. Additionally, during early morning when dew is still present, pests are often inactive, making spraying ineffective at that time.
The best times for pesticide application are between 8:00-10:00 in the morning and 5:00-7:00 in the afternoon. It's also important to avoid using well water for mixing pesticides, as it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can react with the chemical components, reducing their effectiveness.
