Ultrasonic flowmeters are known for their high accuracy, reliability, and suitability for various industrial environments. They offer a non-invasive method of measuring fluid flow, making them an ideal choice for many applications. One of the biggest advantages of ultrasonic flowmeters is their ease of installation compared to other types of flowmeters. With just a few steps, you can have a fully functional system in place.
To begin, select an appropriate measurement point on the pipe. Input the necessary parameters such as pipe diameter and material into the flowmeter, then securely mount the sensors on the pipe surface. However, proper installation is crucial to ensure accurate and stable measurements.
The sensor should be placed in a straight section of the pipe where the fluid flow is uniform and the pipe is completely filled with liquid. It's important to choose a location where the fluid is well-distributed and easily transmits ultrasonic waves. Ideal locations include vertical sections (with upward flow) or horizontal sections. The installation site should be at least 10 diameters upstream and 5 diameters downstream from any valves, elbows, or other obstructions. Avoid areas near pumps, valves, or electrical equipment that could cause interference.
Additionally, avoid installing the flowmeter at the highest point of the system or in vertical pipes with free outlets, as this may lead to air bubbles or sediment accumulation. For open or partially full pipelines, it’s recommended to install the flowmeter in a U-shaped section to ensure proper signal transmission.
The temperature and pressure at the installation point must stay within the operational range of the sensor. Also, consider potential fouling or scaling on the inner walls of the pipe. If scaling is likely, it’s advisable to use a lining or select a cleaner area for installation to maintain measurement accuracy.
The two sensors should be installed horizontally along the pipe axis, within ±45° of the horizontal plane. This helps prevent issues like air bubbles in the upper part or sediment settling in the lower part, which could interfere with the sensor’s performance. If horizontal installation isn't possible due to space constraints, the sensors can be mounted vertically or at an angle, provided there are no air bubbles in the upper portion of the pipe.
