U.S. energy companies try to make energy for the waves

U.S. researchers recently conducted wave power generation tests at the wave test reservoir at Texas A&M University to develop this new type of green energy contained in seawater.

An energy company named “ATARGIS” based in Colorado, USA, developed a device that uses energy conversion similar to windmill blades. Ocean waves propel two blades around a central axis and drive generators connected to it. . The study was funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy.

At present, the prototype produced by the company is about one-tenth of the size of the physical device. The research team plans to improve the device and hopes to conduct formal tests in the sea before 2014.

Researchers expect that a true wave power plant will generate 5 megawatts of electricity. Test leader Stefan Siegel said that research in this area is very attractive due to the abundant energy of waves in the sea. (Reporter Zhang Yongxing)
