Raw material of lime

Natural rocks, such as limestone, chalk, and dolomitic limestone, which are mainly composed of calcium carbonate, can be used to produce lime.

The natural rock whose main component is calcium carbonate is calcined at a suitable temperature to remove the decomposed carbon dioxide, and the obtained calcium oxide (CaO)-based product is lime, which is also called quicklime.

In actual production, in order to accelerate decomposition, the calcination temperature is often increased to 1000 to 1100 °C. Due to the large size of the limestone raw material or the uneven temperature distribution in the kiln during calcination, the lime often contains under-fired lime and over-fired lime. The calcium carbonate in the under-fired lime is not completely decomposed and lacks adhesion when used. Over-fired lime has a dense structure, and the surface is often covered with a layer of molten material, which is very slow to mature. Since the raw material often contains magnesium carbonate (MgCO3), the quicklime also contains the minor component magnesium oxide (MgO). According to the content of magnesium oxide, the quicklime is divided into calcareous lime (MgO≤5%) and magnesium lime (MgO). >5%).

Quicklime is white or gray block. For ease of use, chunks of quicklime often need to be processed into quicklime powder, slaked lime powder or lime paste. The quicklime powder is a fine powder obtained by grinding the massive lime, and the main component thereof is CaO; the slaked lime powder is a powder obtained by aging the bulky quicklime with an appropriate amount of water, which is also called slaked lime, and its main component is Ca(OH)2; Lime paste is a paste obtained by aging a piece of quicklime with more water (about 3-4 times the volume of quicklime). It is also called lime slurry. Its main component is also Ca(OH)2.
