Photo-deformable materials are a type of smart material that can change shape—such as stretching or bending—when exposed to specific wavelengths of light, including ultraviolet or visible light. These materials offer remote, non-contact, and multi-selective control, making them ideal for applications like photosensitive switches, optical sensors, and optical-driven motors, where light energy is directly converted into mechanical motion. Recently, a research team led by Dr. Chen Wei from the International Laboratory at the Suzhou Institute of Nanoscience and Nanobionics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made significant progress in developing a nanomolecular organic dye molecular crystal composite system that exhibits strong photomechanical responses. Using a method similar to the selective orientation and gradient distribution of liquid crystals, they successfully assembled N-α-naphthyl-2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde aldehyde imine nanorods within a polyvinylidene fluoride matrix. This resulted in a novel intelligent photo-induced deformation film. The material can bend significantly under weak 365 nm UV light and fully recover in the dark. By assembling these nanocrystals, the study effectively scaled up the molecular-level photomechanical conversion to a macroscopic level, offering a promising approach for designing next-generation photodeformable smart materials.
