Corn spoilage, commonly known as mildew, typically occurs when the surface of the grain becomes wet and the temperature gradually rises. To ensure safe storage, it is crucial to maintain high-quality storage conditions, reduce moisture content, and implement proper storage techniques.
**How to Prevent Corn from Mildewing:**
1. When purchasing corn, look for grains that are uniform, full, and bright in color. The moisture content should be kept below 14% to minimize the risk of mold growth.
2. Dry and moisture-proof storage is essential. Corn should be stored in a cool, dry environment. Place the corn in sealed plastic bags, ensuring they are filled as much as possible. As the corn consumes oxygen inside the bag, it creates an environment that inhibits mold development. This method helps prevent both mold and insect infestation.
3. Mold often develops due to high humidity in the storage area or localized moisture issues during storage, such as condensation on the surface or water seepage through walls. Therefore, the placement of the corn is critical. Store dry corn on shelves at least 30 cm above the ground and keep it 30 cm away from the walls to ensure good air circulation and reduce the chance of moisture accumulation.
4. Using a storage tank is another effective method. Before filling the tank with corn, thoroughly clean and disinfect the interior. After drying, fill the tank with corn, leaving a space of 40–60 cm from the top. Place dry cotton at the top to absorb any excess moisture and cover it properly. Regularly monitor the warehouse to avoid conditions that could lead to mildew.
5. Removing impurities is an important step in maintaining the safety of stored corn. Before storing, use a sieve to remove any foreign materials that may contribute to spoilage.
6. To prevent mold and pests, regularly inspect the corn during storage. If signs of spoilage appear, promptly turn the pile or dry the corn. Infested corn can be screened to remove damaged kernels and prevent further spread.
7. Regular inspections by the quality control department are necessary to detect early signs of mildew. Timely action must be taken, and warehouse management should be held accountable. These measures are strictly enforced by feed processing plants like Hengtai and Jingfeng Branches. After ten days of dedicated effort, the stacking structure is adjusted to prevent moisture, mold, and pest problems.
By following these steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of corn spoilage and ensure its quality throughout the storage period.
