Preventing stone pollution is always more effective than cleaning, and consistent long-term maintenance is far better than sudden, intensive cleaning. By making the right design choices, selecting suitable materials, and ensuring careful construction and ongoing care, it's possible to significantly reduce and even prevent soil contamination. Proper design means paying close attention to several key aspects when working with sandstone products:
When sandstone is used in flat applications, or when it's placed on external inclined wall caps, areas that aren't meant for drainage, or parts where water might flow into narrow spaces, it becomes highly vulnerable to staining. Water passing through concrete, glass, or other building materials and then reaching the sandstone surface can lead to serious discoloration. In some cases, it’s essential to use materials that are compatible with the stone’s properties. For example, when sandstone is used as a wall lining, special protection should be given to areas around elevators, lift switches, and nearby furniture. Incompatible materials can cause contamination—like oil leaks from cars or permeable mortar on steps that can turn black over time. Poorly cleaned joints after installation are also a major source of stains.
Proper handling includes being attentive during transportation, storage, and installation. Thin sandstone panels are especially fragile and prone to staining. It's important to address stubborn stains like cement residue, paint splatters, protective coatings, scaffolding rust, and mechanical oils promptly and carefully.
From the moment the stone is stored until the end of the construction phase, it should be covered with plastic sheets or anti-stain cloth as much as possible to protect it from damage and contamination.
It's crucial to understand that throughout its service life, a stone may be affected by both internal and external pollution caused by environmental factors or human contact. The best approach is to keep it as far away from potential pollution sources as possible, and to regularly clean and remove dirt. In polluted areas, using the right type of paint or building cleaner can help maintain the stone’s appearance. When cleaning, it's important to do so gently to avoid harming the environment, workers, or the stone itself. Cost-effectiveness should also be considered, which means choosing the most efficient and practical cleaning methods. Therefore, it's important to be familiar with the following: 1. Easy-to-clean areas and methods; 2. The risk of damage during cleaning; 3. The level of contamination on the surface; 4. Whether cleaning is actually necessary.
