Oxalis sorrel, also known as red leaf sorrel or triangular sorrel, is a perennial herb that blooms from April to November. The plant produces capsules as fruits, which split open naturally when mature. It's important to harvest them promptly to avoid losing the seeds. Both the flowers and leaves are sensitive to light—opening on sunny days and closing at night or during cloudy weather when light is low.

This plant prefers moist, semi-shady, and well-ventilated conditions, and it is quite drought-tolerant. It can withstand cold temperatures, but if the temperature drops below 5°C, the above-ground parts of the plant may be damaged. Purple leaf sorrel grows quickly, covering the ground rapidly and helping suppress weed growth. It thrives in sandy, humus-rich, and well-drained soil. It can grow in full sun, partial shade, or even slightly shaded areas, with an ideal temperature range of 24 to 30°C. Growth slows down in summer, and the plant may enter dormancy. After winter frost, the leaves die back, but the roots survive underground and new growth emerges in March of the following year.

Propagation of purple leaf sorrel mainly occurs through ramets, though it can also be grown from seeds or via tissue culture.

For ramet propagation, bulbs are divided and can be done throughout the year. When dividing the bulbs, the plants are first dug up, and the bulbs are cut into smaller pieces. Each section should have at least three bud eyes to ensure successful growth. These cuttings are then placed in a sand bed, where they typically develop into new plants within about 15 days. Once the roots have formed, the young plants can be transplanted into pots or garden beds. Seed propagation is best done in spring, with germination occurring at temperatures between 15°C and 18°C.
