In an old village, there once was a lotus pond filled with beautiful flowers. A wealthy family, the Hong clan, lived nearby. Tang Dong, a man in his forties, had no children. His wife, who had a concubine, became pregnant. To pray for a son, they burned incense and worshipped Buddha day and night. But to their dismay, the child born was a girl.
To comfort his wife, Tang Dong consulted with the concubine and decided to raise the girl as a boy. The concubine claimed she had given birth to a son and named the child Seylang. As Seylang grew, she dressed and acted like a boy. At twelve, the Hong family built a library near the lotus pond, believing Seylang was a boy.
Meanwhile, another couple, the Bai family, also struggled with infertility. Their wife had given birth to three sons, all of whom died young. They believed they were cursed and sought help from fortune tellers. One day, the wife became pregnant again. She made a plan: if it was a girl, she would pretend it was a boy. When the child was born, they dressed her as a girl but named her Yu Niang, and she was raised as a daughter.
As time passed, Yu Niang grew up and joined the same school as Seylang. No one suspected that either of them were girls. They studied together, played by the lotus pond, and formed a deep bond. Both believed they were boys, unaware of their true identities.
Years later, as they approached adulthood, their friendship deepened. Seylang dreamed of marrying Yu Niang, and so did her mother. When their studies ended, they promised to remain close. However, fate had other plans.
When Seylang’s parents discovered she was actually a woman, the village learned the truth. This shocked the Hong family, who were angry at the deception. They demanded that Seylang leave their home. Meanwhile, Yu Niang's mother was heartbroken and tried to find a way to reunite them.
Eventually, a letter arrived from Seylang, expressing her longing and revealing the truth. Yu Niang was overjoyed and wrote back, urging her to return. But the Hong family refused to accept the match, calling it inappropriate. Desperate, the families faced rejection, leading to illness and despair.
Seylang was forced to leave the village, and Yu Niang followed her, living in a temple nearby. One night, they met secretly by the lotus pond, where they vowed to be together forever. In a final act of love, they both jumped into the water, choosing death over separation.
The next morning, the villagers found their bodies, still entwined. A storm raged that night, and by dawn, the lotus pond had risen to cover their graves. From the grave, two lotus flowers bloomed—red and white, tied together. People called them “the twin lotus,†and later, “Bian Lilian,†symbolizing eternal love and sacrifice.
