In a tragic incident that has sparked concern over road safety, a young trainee driver was held accountable for a fatal traffic accident in Zhejiang Province. The event occurred on January 18 at around 1:00 PM on the G50 Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway, near the Changxing section. The accident involved two friends—Hu Mou, a 38-year-old driver, and Qian Mou, a 26-year-old intern driver. Tragically, Hu Mou lost his life after the vehicle overturned, while Qian Mou survived with minor injuries.
The incident began when Hu Mou, driving a Zhejiang-registered off-road vehicle, picked up Qian Mou at a service area in Wuhu, Anhui. Initially, Hu Mou was behind the wheel, but as the journey continued, he became visibly tired. Qian Mou, who had recently obtained his driver’s license, offered to take over the driving. After agreeing, the two swapped places at the Zhejiang border. However, just minutes into the drive, an unexpected situation unfolded.
According to Qian Mou's account, Hu Mou was not wearing a seat belt and was eating radish while sitting in the passenger seat. When Qian noticed this, he tried to fasten his own seat belt, but got distracted. In an attempt to help, Hu Mou reached over to assist him, which caused Qian to briefly look away from the road. That moment of inattention led to a dangerous consequence—the car veered off course and collided with the central guardrail before flipping over.
The Huzhou High-speed Traffic Police reported that the accident was caused by improper operation. Hu Mou, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered severe internal injuries during the rollover and later died after three days of unsuccessful medical treatment. Qian Mou, though injured, managed to survive.
Police officials emphasized that Qian Mou’s actions were a clear violation of safe driving practices. He was found to have engaged in behavior that hindered safe driving, such as not properly securing his seat belt while operating the vehicle. This negligence directly contributed to the tragic outcome. As a result, Qian Mou is now under investigation for criminal responsibility for causing a traffic accident, marking the first such case in Zhejiang this year.
“Many people know that seat belts are essential during a driving test, but they often ignore them once they get their license,†said a police official. “This case highlights the importance of always following safety protocols, regardless of experience or confidence behind the wheel.â€
The case is currently under further investigation, and authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to all traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
