In the heart of New Year's Eve, as families gather to enjoy their feasts and watch the Spring Festival Gala, the firefighters in Yinchuan City are preparing for what they call the "War of the Spring Festival." The 119 Command Center, along with all the frontline fire stations, is on high alert, ready to respond at any moment. This year, the pressure was even greater due to dry weather conditions and a surge in fire incidents caused by fireworks and firewood.
On January 29, the day before the Lunar New Year, a reporter visited the 119 Command Center in Yinchuan. Firefighters were stationed at their phones, constantly monitoring calls. Yang Dongcheng, the director of the command center, explained that during the night of New Year’s Eve and early the next morning, the number of emergency calls can be ten times higher than usual. Most of these fires occur in rural areas, often triggered by fireworks or unattended fires.
Li Guowei, a firefighter from the grassroots squadron, has spent two New Year’s Eves on duty. Last year, he and his team were constantly answering calls, so busy that they couldn’t even lift the phone. When the cooking team brought hot dumplings, they had already gone cold by the time they reached the station. “We have to stay focused and make accurate judgments,†Li said. “It directly affects whether we can respond effectively to save lives and property.â€
Wang Yongpang, a veteran firefighter with over a decade of service, shared how the tradition of eating dinner earlier than others has become a routine. On New Year’s Eve, the first-line firefighters finish their meals before 5 p.m. and immediately go into combat readiness. This practice has been followed for years, almost like an unspoken rule. While the rest of the country enjoys the Spring Festival Gala, firefighters watch it from inside their heavy gear, always prepared to respond at a moment’s notice.
This year marked Wang’s first New Year with his new wife, but he chose to spend it with his fellow firefighters. A fire incident last year left a lasting impression. At midnight, they received a call about a fire in a high-rise building. Upon arrival, there was no visible smoke or flames, so they quickly returned to base. As they drove back, they saw fireworks lighting up the sky, reminding them of home—but their duty kept them on standby.
Peng Runfeng, a new recruit this year, admitted it was his first New Year away from family. However, he felt proud to be part of the team protecting people’s safety. His family fully supported his decision.
As a squad leader, Wang emphasized the importance of maintaining morale among new recruits. Veterans often take time to connect with the newcomers, helping them cope with homesickness. “Our mission is bigger than ourselves,†he said. “We’re here to protect the city and its people.â€
