In the heart of New Year’s Eve, as families gather for feasts and enjoy the Spring Festival Gala, firefighters in Yinchuan are preparing for what they call a “battle†during the holiday. The city’s 119 command center and its grassroots fire stations are on high alert, fully prepared to respond to emergencies at any moment.
On January 29, the day before the Lunar New Year, a reporter visited the 119 command center in Yinchuan. Firefighters were stationed at their desks, constantly monitoring calls. Yang Dongcheng, director of the command center, explained that during the night of New Year’s Eve and early morning hours, the number of emergency calls spikes—often ten times higher than on regular days. With dry weather conditions, most fires occur in rural areas, often caused by fireworks or firewood.
Li Guowei, a firefighter from the grassroots squadron, has spent two New Year’s Eves on duty. He recalled that last year, the team was constantly answering calls, so busy that they couldn’t even lift the phone. When the kitchen staff brought hot dumplings, they were already cold by the time they reached the firefighters. “We have to stay focused and make quick, accurate judgments,†Li said. “It directly affects how quickly we can respond and save lives.â€
Wang Yongpang, a veteran firefighter with a decade of service, is now a squad leader. He shared that during the Spring Festival, his team always eats dinner earlier than the general public. By 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, they are already in full readiness. This tradition has been in place for years, almost like an unspoken rule. While the nation watches the CCTV gala, firefighters remain in heavy gear, waiting for the next call.
Wang recently married this June, making this his first New Year with his wife. Unfortunately, he had to spend it with his fellow firefighters. He still remembers a fire incident last year, when at midnight, they received a report of a fire in a high-rise building in Jinfeng District. Upon arrival, there was no visible smoke or flames, so they quickly returned to base. On the way back, they watched fireworks outside the car window, which reminded them of home—but their duty kept them at their posts.
Peng Runfeng, a new recruit from the special service unit, is spending his first New Year away from family. Though he misses his loved ones, he feels proud of his role in keeping the city safe. His family understands and supports his decision.
As a squad leader, Wang also mentioned that veterans often take time to connect with new recruits on New Year’s Eve, helping ease their homesickness. “Our mission is bigger than personal feelings,†he said. “We are here to protect the people and their property.â€
