Oxalis sorrel, also known as red leaf sorrel or triangular sorrel, is a perennial herb that blooms from April to November. Its fruits are capsules that split open naturally when mature, so it's important to harvest them promptly. Both the flowers and leaves are sensitive to light — they open on sunny days and close at night or during cloudy weather when light levels are low.

This plant prefers moist, semi-shaded, and well-ventilated conditions, while also being drought-tolerant. It has good cold resistance, but when temperatures drop below 5°C, the above-ground parts may be damaged. Purple leaf sorrel grows quickly, covering the ground rapidly and helping suppress weeds. It thrives in sandy, humus-rich, and well-drained soil. It can grow in full sun, partial shade, or even slightly shaded areas, with an ideal temperature range of 24 to 30°C. Growth slows down in summer, and it may go into dormancy. After winter frost, the leaves die back, but the roots survive underground and new growth emerges in March of the following year.

Propagation of purple leaf sorrel mainly involves vegetative reproduction through runners, though it can also be grown from seeds or via tissue culture.

Vegetative propagation, or ramet propagation, involves dividing the bulbs and can be done throughout the year. When propagating by runners, the plant is first dug up, and the bulbs are separated. Each section should have at least three bud eyes before being placed in a sand bed for rooting. New plants typically emerge within about 15 days. Once the roots develop, the seedlings can be transplanted. For seed propagation, sow in spring in pots, with an optimal germination temperature between 15°C and 18°C.
