When working on a pump, it's crucial to pay close attention to the pump seal and its assembly. Any mistakes in these steps can lead to improper repair or even failure of the pump to function correctly. The mechanical seal is one of the most effective methods for sealing rotating equipment. Its precision is quite high, especially in the dynamic and static rings. If disassembled incorrectly or handled improperly, the seal may not perform as intended and could damage the components during reassembly.

1. Precautions for Disassembling the Pump Mechanical Seal

- Avoid using hammers or flat chisels when removing the mechanical seal, as this can damage the delicate sealing parts.
- If the pump has seals at both ends, be extra cautious during disassembly to prevent misalignment or damage.
- If the seal face moves after loosening the gland, the dynamic and static rings should be replaced rather than retightened. Once the friction pair has shifted, the sealing surface will likely be compromised.
- If the sealing element is stuck due to dirt or condensation, make sure to clean it before removal to avoid damaging the components.

2. Installation Tips for Pump Mechanical Seals

- Before installation, check that all sealing components are present and undamaged, especially the dynamic and static rings. Look for any dents, cracks, or deformations. Replace if necessary.
- Ensure the chamfering on the bushing or gland is correct. If not, trim it appropriately.
- Clean all mechanical seal components and contact surfaces with acetone or absolute alcohol before installation. Keep everything clean during the process, particularly the dynamic and static rings and auxiliary sealing elements. Apply a thin layer of clean engine oil or turbine oil to the ring surfaces.
- Tighten the gland only after aligning the coupling. Evenly tighten the bolts to avoid misalignment. Use a feeler gauge or special tools to ensure accuracy within 0.05 mm.
- Check the clearance and concentricity between the gland and the shaft or bushing. Ensure uniformity around the circumference, with tolerances no more than 0.10 mm.
- Adjust the spring compression according to specifications, ensuring it's neither too tight nor too loose. The acceptable error is ±2.00 mm. A too-tight spring increases pressure and wear, while too-loose reduces sealing effectiveness. After installation, the spring should move freely in the seat. For single-spring models, ensure the spring rotation direction is opposite to the shaft’s.
- After installing the dynamic ring, make sure it moves freely. It should rebound automatically when pressed against the spring.
- Never strike the sealing components directly with tools. Use specialized tools instead to avoid damage.
- Place the static ring seal on the back of the static ring before inserting it into the end cover. Protect the static ring area, ensure perpendicular alignment with the end cover centerline, and align the anti-rotation groove with the anti-rotation pin without making direct contact.
