How to choose medical plastic bottle raw materials and supporting equipment

The raw materials of medical plastic bottles must meet the requirements of medical and health. Common plastic varieties are: polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyester (PET) and so on.

Polyethylene (PE) is corrosion resistant and can be chlorinated. Polyethylene is classified into high density (HDPE), low density (LDPE), and linear low density (LLDPE). HDPE has high melting point, hardness and strength, low water absorption, good processability and radiation resistance, and is often used in the production of plastic bottles for tablets; LDPE has good flexibility, elongation and impact strength, and can be used for Plastic bottle for eye drops; LLDPE has high impact strength, fatigue resistance and wear resistance, and is less used in medical packaging.

Polypropylene (PP) has low density, and is superior to high-density polyethylene in strength, hardness and heat resistance, but becomes brittle at low temperature, is not wear-resistant, and is easy to age. However, the corresponding additives can be added for modification, and the performance level of HDPE can be achieved after modification.

Polystyrene (PS) is colorless and transparent, and its light transmittance is second only to plexiglass. It has good colorability, water resistance, chemical stability and general strength. However, PS is brittle, easy to produce stress cracking, and is not resistant to organic solvents such as benzene and gasoline, so it is less used in the field of pharmaceutical packaging. However, after modification, the impact resistance of the material can be greatly improved.

PET has many advantages as a pharmaceutical packaging container. First of all, PET bottles are light and firm, and their strength and elasticity are significantly higher than those of other plastic materials. They are better at blocking water vapor and oxygen in common plastics. PET bottles have good chemical resistance and can be used. The packaging of all items except strong alkali and some organic solvents is suitable for making medicine bottles with thin walls, light weight and high strength. Therefore, PET bottles have a tendency to replace traditional glass bottles.

Processing method and equipment selection of medical plastic bottles

At present, there are two types of processing methods for hollow plastic bottles: extrusion blow molding and injection blow molding.

Depending on the processing method of the medical bottle, different machines can be selected: for example, an extrusion blower, a one-shot injection molding machine, a injection stretch blow molding machine, and an injection molding machine and a blow molding machine for the two-step method. According to the characteristics of various machines, for the common PE, PP medical bottles and PET bottles with a capacity of less than 350ml, one-step injection molding machine can be used; for larger medical bottles, extrusion blow molding machines can be used; PET bottles can only be used in injection stretch blow molding machines.
