As the Spring Festival approaches, many residents are preparing to buy and set off fireworks and firecrackers to celebrate. However, it's important to be aware of the potential dangers associated with these items. Every year, numerous incidents involving fireworks and firecrackers lead to injuries and property damage across the country. In response, the Tangshan Seaport Police have issued safety reminders to help ensure a joyful and secure holiday season. Here are ten key tips to keep in mind when purchasing and using fireworks and firecrackers.
1. Always purchase fireworks from licensed and legal vendors. When selecting products, make sure they look clean, show no signs of mold or deformation, and have clear, complete labels. The packaging should include the manufacturer’s name, address, safety instructions, and detailed Chinese directions for use.
2. Avoid buying or using high-risk fireworks. It is recommended that residents choose only C and D grade toy fireworks, which are designed for safer use. Items like falling guns, pulling cannons, and smashing cannons are more dangerous due to their low sensitivity and can easily ignite or explode if mishandled. These should not be purchased or used.
3. Store and transport fireworks safely. Do not buy large quantities at once, and try to minimize the number of fireworks kept at home. Keep them stored in a cool, dry place away from heat sources, gas lines, and electrical outlets. The longer they are stored, the higher the risk of accidents.
4. Never light fireworks in restricted areas. Always choose an open, flat, and unobstructed outdoor space when setting them off. Be sure to check local regulations to avoid prohibited locations.
5. Practice responsible and civilized behavior. Never throw lit fireworks into crowds, onto vehicles, or at buildings. Avoid launching fireworks from balconies, rooftops, or windows. Also, ensure that walkways and roads remain clear for safe passage.
6. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Unless otherwise specified, never hold fireworks while lighting them. After lighting, step back immediately and watch from a safe distance.
7. Ensure children are always supervised by adults when handling fireworks. Parents should teach their kids about proper and safe usage to prevent accidents and injuries.
8. If a firework behaves abnormally during ignition, do not approach it right away. Wait for it to fully settle before checking. If it doesn’t work, it’s best to soak it in water to reduce the risk of accidental ignition.
9. Be mindful of fire hazards. Before the festival, remove any flammable materials from balconies, rooftops, and patios. Secure items like curtains, air conditioner covers, and other fabrics to prevent them from catching fire. Close doors and windows when leaving the house to protect against flying embers.
10. Avoid carrying flammable or explosive items during public events. This helps maintain safety for everyone involved and prevents unnecessary risks.
