Filament winding is a common method of manufacturing cylindrical composite structures such as pipes and cans. Bayer MaterialScience has developed a new polyurethane formula specifically for the filament winding process. Filament winding method using polyurethane can be made into styrene-free final products. Bayer's new polyurethane formulation, because it contains fewer volatile organic compounds, can effectively produce lighter, stronger, environmentally friendly products than other formulations.
In order to prove that it is possible to use its polyurethane formulation to shape products with filament winding, Bayer manufactured two samples: a low-pressure bottle and a cylinder.
Low pressure bottles are similar to those used in water softeners and water heaters. A low pressure bottle made by filament winding molding using Bayer's polyurethane resin has 20% higher blasting strength than the same article made of epoxy resin.
The cylinder can be used as a pipeline protection material in the oil field instead of the traditional metal layer used to protect the pipeline insulation material. By using polyurethane instead of metal in this application, manufacturers can reduce costs, improve product impact resistance and facilitate assembly.
No matter which products are manufactured, the use of Bayer's new polyurethane formulation in the filament winding process will no longer be limited by the reaction time. Products can be wound in as little as 10 minutes, allowing manufacturers to increase the efficiency of filament winding.
