Japan's enRoute, which is engaged in the business of drones and remote-controlled toys, has collaborated with electric communication equipment manufacturer Nippon Electric Co., Ltd. to develop devices that provide wireless power for the batteries that drones are equipped with.
The problem faced by drones in the past was that it was difficult to replace batteries and recharge in areas where people could not access. The device developed this time solved this problem through wireless power transmission. The specific method is to let the drone equipped with the power receiving device land on a power supply “base†that integrates the 2.4 GHz band common power supply, the power supply antenna, and the rectifying antenna for charging. The power supply unit is equipped with a UGV (unmanned ground vehicle), and it is moved to areas where people cannot access, so that power can be supplied in a specific area.
About 30g of power receiving device. It is lighter than coils used in electromagnetic induction, etc. It can also be equipped with a small drone. Another feature is the use of a resonant coupling method in the microwave band, which provides high degree of freedom of alignment between the power receiving couplers during power supply. By adopting the rectenna technology operated by Nippon Electric Co., the RF-DC conversion efficiency of the rectifier circuit is as high as about 70% or more.
Charging time is approximately 60 minutes. Because it is non-contact charging, it is highly water-resistant and dust-proof, preventing poor charging caused by tiny particles in the volcanic zone and short circuit due to rainfall and the like. It is suitable for disaster investigations, large area surveillance using many multi-rotor aircrafts, etc.
