Nikon Implements Magnesium Reduction Validation Experiment Using Solar Heat

Nikon Corporation of Japan will implement a magnesium (Mg) reduction verification experiment in the original linear experimental facility of the Japan Railway Group's National Institute of Railway Technology (Nihon City, Miyazaki Prefecture) from March 2014 to strive to make use of solar heat. Magnesium reduction is practical.

From the spring of 2013, the company began to use a solar furnace with an internal diameter of 1.5 meters in Northeastern University (an apparatus that uses a large parabolic mirror to collect sunlight to achieve high temperatures) together with Emeritus Professor Tohoku University in Japan. A solar furnace with a diameter of 3 meters will be produced for verification experiments.

Magnesium reduction is indispensable for the social conception of the magnesium cycle proposed by Professor Xiao Bin. The core of this concept is the magnesium fuel cell, which can be reused by reducing magnesium. This type of battery is a primary battery (primary battery) in which magnesium is used as a negative electrode and oxygen in the air is used as a positive electrode, and electricity is generated by the phenomenon that magnesium combines with hydroxide ions and releases electrons.

However, if the power is continuously generated, magnesium will become magnesium compounds such as hydroxides and oxides, which will stop the power generation. The use of high temperatures in solar furnaces reduces these compounds to magnesium metal for reuse. Nikon hopes to improve the performance of solar furnaces and the efficiency of magnesium reduction reactions through validation experiments.
