Japan Develops New Solar Cell Materials

The Japan Industrial Technology Research Institute recently developed a new type of highly efficient compound solar cell material that can be mass-produced.

This material is made by spraying a copper selenium indium composite material on a glass substrate in a crucible of 300-500 degrees Celsius. Compared with the conventional manufacturing method, crystals with high purity can be formed in the power generation layer to increase the conversion efficiency of solar energy. The institute is preparing to transfer this technology to domestic companies and commercialize it within two years.

The technology was developed by a research team led by Ren Murong, deputy director of the Institute's Solar Power Research Center. This compound solar cell generates electricity using a compound layer composed of four metals such as copper.

At present, the production methods used by companies such as Showa Shell Petroleum, which has started mass production of compound solar cells, require a sintering process. The method of the Institute of Industrial Technology makes the manufacturing process of solar cells simpler and more suitable for mass production.

After testing, this new type of solar cell converts 14.9% of solar energy into electricity, while the conversion rate of Showa Shell Petroleum, Honda, etc. products is only 10%-12%. The silicon crystal solar cells that are currently widely used have a power generation efficiency of about 15%. It is said that the compound type solar cell is expected to reduce costs because it uses less materials.
